Happy New Year!
It's 2013 here at the moment, and, as in previous years, there was nothing special on television. "Jerry Maguire" on TV One and "Best of Graham Norton" on TV3. We switched from the "Glee" marathon on Sky TV's "Vibe" channel a couple minutes before midnight, changing to TV One—which had nothing more than a quick, unceremonious, countdown to the New Year. As always. Bastards.
We are the first major country to see the New Year, yet none of the TV channels can manage anything—GASP!—live for New Year's Eve, or even anything meaningful for the bloody countdown. Cheap as, bargain basement TV, it is. Not worthy of a modern country and a bloody disgrace for New Zealand. TVNZ and whoever owns TV3 at the moment should be ashamed of themselves for being so utterly useless. Not that they actually care. At all.
The neighbourhood is resounding with the sound of fireworks, though, in case we (understandably) missed the non-programmes on the free-to-air channels. Ordinary folks in the area let us know the new year has begun, even if TVNZ and TV3 were far too cheap and stupid to do so.
So, Happy New Year! So full of promise and opportunity! One thing we know for certain, though: TVNZ and TV3 will be as utterly useless, as much of an utter disgrace, one year from now as they were tonight (and so many previous New Year's Eves). Kind of comforting, in a weird way, to have that blanket of uselessness to snuggle into!
Yeah. Happy New Year, despite it all!

Happy New Year, Arthur - although it's still 16.5 hours away for me...
Yeah, I'm always ahead of the times… ;-)
