AmeriNZ #48 - Preachers' Kids

Episode 48 is now available, and it's free no matter where you get it from. You can listen to it or download it through the player at the bottom of the post here, or subscribe for free through iTunes here (you must have the free iTunes player installed). You can also listen to it for free through the player on my MySpace page.

This is a special episode, and one of my favourites yet! I'm joined by two other gay podcasters who, like me, are preachers' kids: Tim Corrimal (Go Rainbow Radio and There Are Some Who Call Me Tim) and Eric (Confessions of a Southern Boy in Yankee Land). We have a wide-ranging conversation about being preachers' kids who grew up gay. What's it like for a gay kid growing up, literally, in the church? Were we affected by Biblical passages used against gay people? How do we feel about religion now?

We share some stories from our growing up, talk about some differences between “mainstream” and “evangelical” protestants, and plenty of other things, too. This conversation was too interesting to me to cut into two parts, so I hope you'll forgive the longer length episode.

Great show you guys! What a great group to talk about religion and being gay. Don't worry Tim, I didn't have a problem hearing all the religion stuff at all. I love hearing you guys chat. I really enjoyed it!

OK... this is why I miss my iPod. I seriously walked into the Apple Store the other day with every intention of buying a new one, but I chickened out. I know I can listen on my computer, but it's just not the same...

I'll make a point to listen to this show though... gays and god always make for a spirited discussion!

I haven't listened to the other two podcasters but this episode made me want to add them to my list.

I enjoyed the thematic topic this time. Does Nigel hold the same view about religion as you, Arthur? If not, do you talk religion much? I know Archerr and the BF don't talk about it much because they have very different views on religion -- agree to disagree kind-of-thing.

I loved listening to the show and the discussion on religion and its whole relationship to gays.

When it comes to subjects like these, Christians who are not willing to give time to another way of thinking are far worse enemies to Christianity than any other "enemy" they are taught to fear.

Thanks again for a great show, and I'll be listening!

Archerr: I'm glad you enjoyed it! You've set a high standard for group shows, so I'm especially pleased. You know, they always say you shouldn't talk about religion and politics--but if I followed that, I'd never talk about anything!

CondoBlogger: I hope you're back in pod-land (or equivalent) soon! This was a very fun podcast to do, that's for sure.

JQP: I'm glad you're going to give them a listen--I really enjoy their podcasts and like them as people, too.

Nigel and I aren't totally dissimilar in our religious outlook, though I don't think we use the same names. But we don't talk about religion very much, simply because it's not a part of our lives, I guess. But when it comes ot politics and religion, we see eye-to-eye, a bit like Archerr and the BF, actually.

David: I couldn't agree with you more. I'd also add that relgion isn't by definition an enemy of gay people, though fundamentalism of any stripe is.

I look forward to more discussions with you!

I meant to comment last week...but you know life gets in the way sometimes.

I absolutely loved this episode! It was by far my favorite one! Very interesting. Of course it didn't hurt to have Tim on, as he is one of my favorite podcasters too. I've never heard the other podcast, but I suppose it's one more I should try out! Great podcast!

Thanks, Holly! I know I'm repeating myself, but this was one of my favourite episodes to record (mind you, I say that after I record any episode with a guest, so it must be true). Bot Tim and Eric are on my "must listen to" list.
