No tears

American TV preacher Jerry Falwell is dead at 73. Pardon my total lack of “Christian” charity, but good riddance to bad rubbish.

Falwell was racist, sexist and homophobic and I’m not sorry he’s dead. He defended “separate but equal” racism in the
US and apartheid in South Africa; he said the “anti-Christ” would be a Jewish male; he opposed women’s rights and, of course, a woman’s right to choose.

But he was singular in his hatred of gay and lesbian people, once famously issuing a “Declaration of War” against gay people. He used his TV pulpit to spread lies and slander about gay and lesbian people and, in so doing, gave encouragement to politicians’ anti-gay crusades as well as the violence of bashers. His words and actions would have left gay and lesbian children of his followers or other fundamentalists feeling that suicide was their only way out, and some no doubt took that route because of him.

So you’ll have to excuse me for not feeling the least bit sorry he’s dead. I only wish his hatefilled ideas had gone to the grave with him, but, sadly, they haven’t.

ding dong the asshole is dead! Yeah, right there with you. And as Darren asked me this morning - "Do you think he's in Heaven?" My money is on no.

Yep, d, I'm betting on "no", too.

No tears from me either, even though he was probably not the worst of the lot....

Well written! I have to say that my writings were not nearly as eloquent, in fact I decided to have a little fun with his picture on my post about him. Not that I am not a compassionate person, in fact I feel awful for being so hateful towards him, but then I think of all the stuff that man has done and people he has hurt and he is no better than a criminal on death row, so I treat him as such. I guess the guilt of saying what I said is just my good Midwestern upbringing.

LiF: The fact that he's no longer the worst is probably the only thing I do feel sad about.

Jimmi: Thanks! Ordinarily, I'd agree about the Midwestern Guilt thing, but this is one case where I've suspended that obligation for myself. Even if I tried, I just couldn't feel anything but glad.

I have to say I felt nothing about his death. Well I take that back I felt relief.

No more stupid hateful things to come out of his mouth. Although, in recent years most notably the 9/11 comment, what he said was so stupid even conservatives had to recognize him for the nut he was.

And I have to agree that his hatefilled ideas are not gone. They've been passed on to a new generation.

But I'm hopefully they will have less and less of an impact on life in America.
