2017 has arrived in New Zealand, accompanied by people in the neighbourhood shooting off fireworks. Nothing new in that, of course. But the main thing is, 2016 is over—and good riddance!
When I was a kid, I used to imagine the new year sweeping across the globe like the sort of massive shock wave seen in an apocalyptic movie, only positive. I can also remember watching TV coverage as the new year arrived in different countries. I always liked that.

Not sure the year is over until it's New Year's in Hawaii. Or at least in Albany, NY.
