NZMM Day 9 – Headless Chickens

Headless Chickens was a rock/industrial band on the Flying Nun label, and often made songs that were very different from the label’s usual “Dunedin sound”.

The video at the top is of “Cruise Control”, the 1991 hit from Headless Chickens, though I don’t think I heard it until about a decade later. It reached Number 6 on the NZ chart, and number 26 in Australia. The video won Best Video at the 1992 New Zealand Music Awards.

Their biggest hit was 1994’s “George” (below) which went to Number One (and 67 in Australia). I can't remember ever hearing that song until I started work on this post.

The female lead on “Cruise Control” was Fiona McDonald, who was asked to join the group. She won Best Female Vocalist twice, in 1992 and 1994. Ten years later, in 2004, she was one of the three judges in the first season of “NZ Idol”. Now, she does announcing on television and also has worked as a presenter on The Shopping Channel.

Headless Chickens disbanded in 1998. I still like “Cruise Control”.
