Kids these days

In the photo above, Vajonno, Matt-matt and our niece Stacie explore a Shisha (aka Hookah)—I can certify that here was nothing illegal in that thing. Apparently these things are all the rage among young people in New Zealand. In my day, we called it something else and people filled it with something else, but that was a more innocent time. Maybe kids these days are more sensible than we were.

A student in one of the classes I teach did a presentation on the hookah this semester. I was relieved that he didn't mention any illegal use of the thing. We've got a new shop 2 blocks from campus that stocks a bunch of these things.

I can honestly say I've never heard anyone talk about using them with anything illegal, though I'm sure some people must do that. Most of the people I know who talk about them, talk about the flavours. In Auckland, there are places where they're used publicly. The first place I saw that was at a café on Karangahape Road.

Not my thing, certainly, but it's interesting.
